The Children’s and Youth Troupes were established in 2006 and 2009 respectively to promote Chinese dance of Hong Kong character, and provide comprehensive professional dance and arts training to children and young people. Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) has developed a unique innovative educational model, “Training—Performance—Appreciation”, which both allows students to acquire high-quality dance training and focus on their personal artistic development. Through a series of dance workshops and participation in overseas cultural artistic exchanges, students gain comprehensive dance and artistic experience. Such activities enhance artistic cultural exchange as well as establishing meaningful liaisons. Our instructors are highly qualified dance professionals who are dedicated to dance education and to passing an important aspect of Chinese cultural heritage on to the next generation of dancers. Looking towards the future, HKDC will continue to offer children and young people a happy, creative and fulfilling dance environment.
Our programme emphasizes skills training to enhance coordination and flexibility so that students are able to accomplish such aspects of dance as turn-out, pointe and extension of body. In addition to training students in correct posture, this strengthens their foundational concepts of traditional aesthetic and dance performance. It also provides training in suppleness and body strength, personal skills and control through a step-by-step process and structured teaching materials, thus equipping them with the fundamental skills and knowledge required by practitioners of Chinese dance.
In tandem with training, Performance is a major component of our programme. Through performance, students learn about teamwork and the concept of working towards objectives, both enhancing their level of artistry and developing their performing skills. By collaborating with different arts groups, our programme also provides focused artistic direction for stage performance and various presentation platforms.
The major objective of the “Appreciation” aspect of our programme is to allow students to “leave the classroom and explore the wider world of the arts”. Through professional dance training and the presentation of student performances on stage, our programme brings students into the world of artistic appreciation and helps them develop their abilities in this regard. In addition to lessons in the classroom, our programme includes regular seminars by dance education practitioners and specialists, as well as observation of training sessions and rehearsals by HKDC’s professional dancers. This allows students to hone their artistic sensibility by bringing their learning from theory into practice.
