Shortlisting Panel’s commentary:

The Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Dancer is presented to Hua Chi-yu for her performance of Lady White in Hong Kong Dance Company’s Lady White of West Lake.  Hua gives a wonderfully nuanced portrayal of Bai Suzhen in each stage of her complex story, from shape shifting white water snake spirit, its transformation into elegant lady, her love of a young scholar, the experience of his loss, and the inevitability of her return to reptilian origins, deftly leading us through repellent fascination, buoyant expectation, ecstasy, desolation, and rueful resignation.
